With only a few broken branches and some scattered leaves for clues, fifteen year old Ralph Turner fears the worst has happened when his baby brother, Jacob, suddenly disappears. But with the help of his friends, and a Gandolf the Wizard look-a-like, Ralph embarks on a life-altering adventure through, and under, the town, in a desperate, and oftentimes dangerous, attempt to get Jacob back before anyone even knows he's missing. The only question remaining is, will they get there in time?

The weekend started out like any other. Mom vacuuming the house, a morning of cartoon watching on the sofa, the boys avoiding house work at all costs and a trip to the corner store for candy and soda. But Ralph and Jacob Turner had no idea that such an ordinary Saturday morning was about to turn into a nightmare that would take them through a tunnel system under their quiet town that they could never have imagined existed. Faced with swarming bats, falling boulders, deep caverns and underground tidal flows, Ralph searches for Jacob with the help of his close friends, a kind old man not ready to give up on life, and the most unexpected of all, the town bully. Throughout the search the boys face teenage angst, dangerous challenges and obstacles and learn more about themselves and each other than they would ever have thought possible. Unexpected heroes emerge and the beginnings of a blossoming romance shed some hope and optimism on this otherwise seemingly hopeless trek.

The white, lacy curtain-liner was jerked back into place as the brown haired, freckle-faced boy made his way up the cobblestone path to the front door. Mrs. Teasdale peered out from behind the sheer camouflage with cruel, calculating eyes while hawk-like talons gripped the fragile fabric. Her mouth twisted into a horrible sneer as she watched the boy bend over to pick up a daffodil. The dark, musty and stale interior of her home was a stark contrast to the cheery, sunny spring afternoon that everyone else was enjoying outside. The old lady’s mouth was set in a firm, wrinkled line while deep creases folded into themselves between her scowling eyes as she watched his approach. Translucent face powder afforded little color to her pale complexion and only emphasized the fine, but long, wisps that bearded her chin. She hated children. She hated people. She hated everyone and wished for nothing more than to be left alone.

Nothing is ever simple in the small harbor town that Jacob and Ralph Turner reside in and today was going to be no exception. With a mystery surrounding a cantankerous woman's death to a stolen bike that seems impossible to find to the discovery of a neighbor with a shady and criminal past, the Turner boys are as busy as ever. New friendships, and relationships, develop, old ones deepen and the group takes on another new member.

What do you do when your girlfriend is nearly run down by a speeding muscle car and the local police are helpless to catch the driver? What do you do when your favorite neighborhood dog, Rosco, one you've begun to think of as your own, is then hit and killed by the very same driver? Fifteen-year-old Ralph Turner is faced with some heavy choices as he races against time to catch a hit-and-run driver that has been terrorizing the town before he claims another victim, maybe even his own baby brother.

Jacob Turner finally has his own group of friends. Gone are the days he pathetically chases after Ralph, his older brother, and his crowd. Two new kids, twin brothers, soon add to the fun and adventures Jacob is just beginning to have, but between the ever-present threat of a hit-and-run driver and a near fatal catastrophe with a rope swing that should never have been erected, life is never just business as usual for nine-year-old Jacob. But things really take a turn for the worse when Denny, one of Jacob's new friends, a boy with special needs, is the third victim of the dreaded and reckless hit-and-run driver.
